Voltage Harmonic Reduction Using Current Source Inverter as a Series Active Power Filter

Active power filter are been widely used for harmonic elimination. Harmonics are generated by nonlinear load in ac distribution system. The active power filters are broadly classified as shunt active power filter, series active power filter and hybrid filters. With regard to circuit topology, there are two basic kinds of active filter, voltage source and current source. The series active power filter acts as harmonic compensator for the source voltage. This paper presents mitigation of voltage harmonics, using Current Source Inverter(CSI) as a series active power filter. The compensation strategy is based on extraction of unit vector template. Reference voltage signals are derived from the distorted source voltage. Measured load voltage is compared with the reference voltage, in hysteresis controller to generate gate pulses to the active filter(Current Source Inverter). Simulations are done using MATLAB/SIMULINK using nonlinear load. It is observed from the results that the total harmonic reduction for voltage waveform is improved by connecting series active filter.
